and for this week's dose of irony, I now have a tattoo that says Read or Die, and I was told this week that one of my retinas appears to be detaching.

Seriously? Does that mean your eyeball is going to fall out?
Not fall out, but could go blind. I go to a specialist in a couple of weeks, they might decide to seal it (retina to eye) together with a laser to stop it from further tearing for the time being.
